Acute Toxicity of Herbicides and Sensibility of Aquatic Plant Wolffia brasiliensis as a Bioindicator Organism Planta Daninha
PEREIRA,P.C.; BRUNETTI,I.A.; CASTRO,K.S.; CHIAROTTI,L.F.; SANTOS,B.E.; MORAES,J.C.; CRUZ,C..
ABSTRACT: This study aimed to establish the mass cultivation of Wolffia brasiliensis under laboratory conditions, determine the sensitivity of reference substances (potassium dichromate, sodium chloride, and potassium chloride), and estimate the acute toxicity (LC50;7d) for the herbicide glyphosate, diquat, paraquat, imazapyr, 2,4-D, saflufenacil, imazamox, penoxsulam, metsulfuron-methyl, and atrazine. Three media were tested for culture establishment: Hoagland’s medium, 5.0 g L-1 NPK fertilizer (20-5-20), a mixture of Oxisol + organic substrate of decaying aquatic plant (2:1; v v-1). Sensitivity tests with reference substances and acute toxicity for herbicides were carried out after establishing the cultivation. The species W. brasiliensis presented an...

EFFECTS OF FIRM-SPECIFIC FACTORS ON R&D EXPENDITURES OF AGRIBUSINESS COMPANIES AgEcon
Roucan-Kane, Maud; Ubilava, David; Xu, Pei.
The objective of this paper is to determine how the firm's infrastructure, the financial characteristics of a company (net income, sales), and the organizational structure (number of acquisitions, age of establishment of the firm) affect R&D investments in the agricultural sector. We use data for companies under the SIC codes for agricultural chemicals, and crop planning and protection. The results based on analysis of 69 observations of 12 firms revealed that firm's financial and organizational infrastructure does affect its R&D expenditures. Older and larger firms tend to spend more on R&D. During the last 17 years the R&D expenditures with respect to the sales of the company have been reduced. Finally, contrary to the expectations,...

Energy and Chemicals from Native Grasses: Production, Transportation and Processing Technologies Considered in the Northern Great Plains AgEcon
Tiffany, Douglas G.; Jordan, Brendan; Dietrich, Erin; Vargo-Daggett, Becca.
Production of biomass from native prairie species offers the opportunity to produce energy and chemicals while providing substantial ecological services in the Northern Great Plains. This paper analyzes the application of rapid pyrolysis to produce bio-oil, which has the potential for use as a low-grade fuel oil or as a source for extraction of valuable chemicals. Yields of bio-oil, the quantities of extractable chemicals, and chemical prices drive the economics of this concept, which has a more extensive track record utilizing wood chips. A spreadsheet model was developed to determine gross margins available to defray costs to extract and refine such chemical products as hydroxyacetaldehyde, phenol, formic acid, acetic acid and various resins....

Etude du comportement à court terme de produits chimiques flottants après leur déversement en mer et recherche d'un indicateur d'exposition biologique ArchiMer
Mamaca, Emina.
Large volumes of chemicals are produced each year. Shipment of these chemicals by boats and barge transiting along coastal marine route are numerous. Recent examples of chemical spills as Eiwa Maru (2002) sinking with 5000 T of xylène from 20 nm of Tokyo and less far from our coastline the Ievoli Sun (2000) which sank and release 1000 T of styren has raised concern about the general lack of information of the fate of chemicals at sea and the impact on fauna and flora. The goal of this study is to characterize the behaviour of some selected chemicals at sea in order to evaluate the cinetic of natural dispersion, emulsification and evaporation. This study is done in three scale : in laboratory with a new methodologie created for this purpose, in a pilot...

Les pollutions marines accidentelles. Au-delà du pétrole brut, les produits chimiques et autres déversements en mer ArchiMer
Marchand, Michel.
At every new marine pollution the same interrogations : to take action and in which way? What could be the consequences? At first, to know the behaviour of pollutants, hydrocarbon or chemicals. But the improvement of knowledges or expert appraisement will not be sufficient with regards to a liberal logic which is not interested in maritime safety.

Marine litter, future prospects for research ArchiMer
Galgani, Francois.
As far back as 1870, i.e., about 150 years ago, Jules Verne described the accumulation of debris in the convergence zone of the North Atlantic Ocean in his famous novel entitled “Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea.” Many scientific reports have addressed this topic since and our main concern today is the ever increasing volume of marine litter invading the oceans in various and complex ways. One of the current main challenges is assessing the final destination of this litter. To date, its adverse effects on marine life have only occasionally been investigated and many questions remain unanswered. In addition to efforts to monitor and reduce litter, recent literature has underlined the scientific community's focus on specific issues such as (i) the...

The outbreak of COVID-19 raised numerous questions on the interactions between the occurrence of new infections, the environment, climate and health. The European Union requested the H2020 HERA project which aims at setting priorities in research on environment, climate and health, to identify relevant research needs regarding Covid-19. The emergence and spread of SARS-CoV-2 appears to be related to urbanization, habitat destruction, live animal trade, intensive livestock farming and global travel. The contribution of climate and air pollution requires additional studies. Importantly, the severity of COVID-19 depends on the interactions between the viral infection, ageing and chronic diseases such as metabolic, respiratory and cardiovascular diseases and...
